Philadelphia, Pa.—Sophomore Cade Antonucci had a career-best outing to win the College Men's Javelin Throw at the Penn Relays Carnival at historic Franklin Field Saturday. Antonucci is the first Auburn male to win a throwing event at Penn Relays since Brett Dull won the discus throw in 1974. Freshman sprinter Anthony Schwartz won silver in the men's 100m and he was a part of the 4x100m relay that claimed fourth.
Antonucci was in second place until his sixth and final throw when he launched a toss of 72.37m/237-5 to capture gold. It was a personal-best mark for the Mays Landing, N.J., native and the second-best throw in school history. He was the most consistent performer in the competition with three of six throws over 68 meters and was the only athlete with a toss over 70 meters. Teammate John Putnam was fifth in the event.
Schwartz ran a season-best 10.25 and was just edged out by Houston's Mario Burke who won in 10.20. Earlier in the day, Schwartz teamed with Marrel Parker, Shaun Shivers and Chiason Tenkiang to run a 40.33 in the 4x100m.
Sophomore Tori McKinley, a seventh-place finisher at the Penn Relays shot put two days earlier, was sixth in the women's discus after a best throw of 49.72m/163-1.
In Athens, Ga., members of the Auburn squad had success competing in the Torrin Lawrence Invitational. Freshman James Courson won his first college event, claiming the men's pole vault (4.88m/15-11), while sophomore Myra Mack won the women's 400m in a personal-best time of 55.10.
Skyler Daniel and Caroline Lawrence tied for second in the women's high jump as both cleared 1.75m/5-8.75. Silas Kipngetich also won silver after posting a 3:48.04 in the men's 1500m.
Auburn will have a week off from competition before the 2019 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, May 9-11, in Fayetteville, Ark.
