AUBURN, Ala. –Savannah Carter and Alex Stewart have been promoted to the role of women's basketball assistant coach, it was announced today by head coach Johnnie Harris.
"With the new rule of countable coaches allowed on the floor by the NCAA, I have decided to promote Savannah Carter and Alex Stewart to Assistant Coach titles," Harris said. "This decision came from their previous experience of being assistant coaches and fulfilling this role for us as the designated coaches in the absence of coaches during recruiting periods this past season.
"Savannah Carter has played in this system and is able to teach our players exactly what I want and develop them within this system. Stew has dedicated herself to learn our system and understanding what I want on and off the court. With the two of them, our staff has become even more dynamic than it already has been."
In January, the NCAA Division I Council changed its rules for coaching limits, adding two additional assistant coaches in men's and women's basketball.
Carter begins her third season on Harris' staff, serving as director of player development the last two years. She came to Auburn after a year as assistant coach at Pearl River Community College in Mississippi, along with several other coaching stops. Carter played for Harris at Mississippi State from 2013-15 and was named to the SEC Community Service Team.
"It's going to be so much fun being back on the court," Carter said. "I am thankful for the position Coach Harris is putting me in. I am looking forward to getting started!"
Stewart served as Auburn's director of basketball operations the past two seasons. Prior to joining Harris' staff, she was an assistant coach at Colgate in 2020-21 and part of Georgia Southern's staff from 2015-19. She also had assistant coaching stops at Toledo, Jacksonville and North Greenville, and she served as head coach at Agnes Scott in 2007-08. A 2004 Georgia Tech graduate, Stewart was an All-ACC Third Team selection as a junior, and finished her collegiate career third all-time at Tech in assists and free throws.
"I am extremely excited and grateful for this opportunity that Coach Harris has given me," Stewart said. "I look forward to being back on the court and cannot wait to get to work."
