Intercollegiate athletics is not only about winning and losing, but also about athlete becoming better rounded individuals by learning from the experience of others. Debbie Jean Sonnenberg has spent time during her playing career in three countries and two states allowing her to offer experiences that are quite unique. Sonnenberg offers experience not only as a coach on the international level, but also as a player.

Sonnenberg's most recent international experience came while representing her native Canada in the 1996 Summer Olympics. Sonnenberg pitched for the Canadian team which finished fifth. Prior to her Olympic expereince, she also represented Canada in the Pan American Games in 1995 in Parana, Argentina and the Pan American Qualifying Tournament where she had the most wins in the tournament and a perfect ERA.

A three-time All-Canadian performer, Sonnenberg participated on Gold Medal teams in the Canadian Sr. Nationals and the Canadian Jr. Nationals. In the 1993 Canadian Jr. Nationals, she pitched back-to-back perfect games en route to being named MVP of the tournament, a feat she also accomplished in 1994. She was also named top pitcher of the tournament,

A four-time NAIA All-American, Sonnenberg was named District 27 Player of the Year each of her four years at Huntingdon College where she played under the tutelage of Coach Tina Deese. Huntingdon appeared in the NAIA Top 10 in each of Sonnenberg's four seasons and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament finishing third both times. Sonnenberg is the holder of several NAIA records including most wins in a season and career, most strikeouts in a season and career and the most strikeouts in the NAIA National Tournament. 

Sonnenberg's coaching experience, like her playing experience, is accumulated internationally. Most recently, she served as an assistant at Burnside High School in Christchurch, New Zealand. At Burnside, Sonnenberg was responsible for the pitching staff in addition to scouting and game preparation. Prior to her stint in New Zealand, Sonnenberg was an assistant at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. At Delta State, she was in charge of developing the pitching staff, scouting opponents and recruiting. 

Hailing from Leduc, Alberta, Sonnenberg earned a bachelor's degree from Huntingdon in Human Performance and Kinesiology and Psychology. She is planning to participate in the 1998 World Championships in Japan and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
