Auburn could only muster four hits off of the No. 3 South Carolina pitching staff as Auburn fell 10-1 on Saturday afternoon at Sarge Frye Field. Bruce Edwards had half of Auburn's hits on the afternoon and is now 6-for-8 in the weekend series.
South Carolina (27-8, 8-6 SEC) came out hot in its half of the first inning, hitting a pair of three-run home runs off of Auburn (25-13, 4-10 SEC) starter Taylor Thompson (4-1), who allowed a career-high six runs on five hits and two walks in 0.2 innings to suffer his first career loss.
Luke Greinke extended his hitting streak to 13 games with his two-out single to left in the top of the sixth, Auburn's first hit of the game since Edwards led off the game with a single.
Bryan Woodall made his longest career relief appearance for Auburn, entering for Thompson in the first and going 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits without issuing a walk. Josh Blake followed with 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, and Johnny Thompson closed out the game with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
"Some guys came out of the bullpen and threw the ball fairly well, guys that hadn't been throwing the ball well of late, so that is a positive we can take out of this," Auburn Head Coach Tom Slater said.
Joseph Sanders kept the Tigers from being shutout with a sacrifice fly in the ninth to score Josh Donaldson, who went 0-for-1 with three walks.
Arik Hempy (3-0) went 6.2 innings in the start for South Carolina, surrendering just two hits and issuing four walks while striking out five.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the series at 12:30pm CT on Sunday. Auburn sends So. RHP Justin Bristow (1-3) to the mound while South Carolina has yet to decide on a starter.
