AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 23 Auburn men's tennis team closed out competition at the Hokie Challenge on the campus of Virginia Tech Sunday. The Tigers faced the Indiana Hoosiers on the tournament's final day, winning six matches.
"Overall, I'm very pleased with weekend," head coach Eric Shore said. "The team competed well and we gained some experience for our younger guys. Our captain Tim Puetz had a great weekend going undefeated in both singles and doubles and has set a good example for rest of the team.
"There were a lot of positive things that came out this weekend, but we still have aspects to work on. However, I'm very encouraged for the future."
No. 24 Tim Puetz, a junior from Usingen, Germany, defeated Santiago Gruter of Indiana (7-6, 6-1) to win Flight A. He and doubles partner Alex Stamchev won doubles Flight A after topping Stephen Vogl and Will Kendall, 6-4, 6-2.
Other singles winners were freshmen Andreas Mies, Alexander Sajonz and Lucas Lopasso. Mies was named Flight D champion after defeating Maxime Armengaud in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Sajonz was Auburn's other flight winner when he recorded a two-set 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Will Kendall.
Lopasso earned his first collegiate win in a two-set 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory over Indiana's Alex Van Gils in Flight F.
The Tigers picked up another doubles win in Flight C when Sajonz and freshman Tim Hewitt defeated Josh MacTaggart and Gruter, 8-5.
Up next for Auburn is the two-day ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Tuscaloosa. The Tigers open the tournament facing Duke on Jan. 29.
