COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Auburn men's swimming and diving team sits in sixth place with 215.5 points after day two of the 2010 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday. The three-day meet is being held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State University.
California is in first with 348.5 points and Texas (330), Arizona (269), Florida (264) and Stanford (221) round out the top five.
"The second day of competition wasn't what we thought it would be and what we know it could have been," head coach Brett Hawke said. "However, we have to move on from having a bad day and come back tomorrow with a new attitude."
The team of Jared White, Adam Klein, Tyler McGill and Gideon Louw opened the evening with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, finishing in a season-best time of 1:24.13. The runner-up finish marks the fifth-straight year that the Tigers have clocked one of the top two times in the meet.
Swimming in his third-consecutive 100 fly championship final was team captain McGill. The Champaign, Ill., product touched in fourth with a time of 46.01. Classmate Jordan Anderson swam in the consolation final and finished 16th overall in 47.30.
Auburn had three student-athletes score points in the 100 breast, which was the most for the team since 2007. Klein, swimming in his second-straight championship final, led the way with a fifth-place finish in 52.51. Christopher Fox took 11th in 53.59, while freshman Stuart Ferguson earned his first-career All-America honor with a 14th-place finish in 53.65.
Senior diver Kelly Marx reached his third-straight championship final after taking eighth in the preliminary round. Marx concluded the evening in seventh, tallying 414.85 points.
"I'm really proud of Kelly (Marx) today because it was another great contest tonight," head diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "He really had to fight this afternoon to get into the finals and he was able to move a place to help the team in the points."
A trio of Tigers swam in the consolation final of the 100 back and were led by freshman Tony Cox, who picked up his first-ever All-America honor with a 12th-place finish in a time of 46.67. Junior Jared White took 15th (47.37) and senior Pascal Wollach finished 16th (47.91).
The evening concluded with the 800 free relay and the team of Kyle Owens, Kohlton Norys, Fox and Will Dove finished 13th with a time of 6:29.16.
A total of 14 student-athletes picked up All-America honors at the end of the day.

On the day overall
"I'm really proud of Kelly (Marx) today because it was another great contest. He really had to fight this afternoon to get into the finals. Kelly started off great tonight, but his third through fifth rounds were not as solid as we would have liked them to be. However, Kelly was able to move up a place to help the team in the points. Being a senior, I know he wanted to finish the springboard competition a little higher. But, with that said, he is an All-American and I'm really proud of him."
