COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 5/8 Auburn swimming and diving team closed out its Texas road swing at the TAMU Student Recreation Natatorium on the campus of Texas A&M. The No. 5 Tiger men defeated the Aggies, 159-136. The No. 8 women fell to the No. 6 Aggies, 169-129, but defeated SMU, 204-87.
With the win, the men improve to 4-1, while the women are now 3-3 on the season.
"I'm really happy with way the team has come through and performed," Brett Hawke, head coach, said. "It is really hard to be on the road for this long, but we saw a lot of fight from a handful of swimmers.
"We mixed up the men's order and had some kids swim in different races, getting really good results. This is all preparation for the championship season."
Kohlton Norys, Michael Silva, Adam Brown and Gideon Louw kicked things off with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The quartet picked up a NCAA "B" cut time of 1:28.67. In the day's final relay, Tyler McGill, Louw, Karl Krug and Brown won the 200 free relay in 1:18.92.
The men put together a tight race in the 100 breast, seeing the Tigers go 1-2-3 and having just a .29 second difference between first and third. Junior Christopher Fox won the event in 55.49, while Silva and Adam Klein came in second (55.68) and third (55.78), respectively.
Auburn picked up another 1-2-3 finish on the meet, coming in the 50 free. Brown came in first in 19.85, Louw took second in 20.17 and Fox closed out with a third-place finish in 20.48. Brown tallied his second top-finish of the day in the 100 fly, finishing in 48.23 and just edging out second-place finisher senior Jordan Anderson (48.50).
Senior Will Dove recorded a win in the 500 free with a time of 4:29.21, beating Aggies' Omar Enriquez by .71 seconds. Dove, along Kyle Maese, led the Tigers in the 200 free. The pair finished second (1:40.05) and third (1:41.32), respectively.
Other first-place swimmers were Pascal Wollach, Max Murphy, Tyler McGill and Klein. Wollach and Murphy led the charge in the backstroke events, seeing Wollach win the 100 back with a B time of 48.60 and Murphy winning the 200 back in 1:47.63. McGill won the 100 free (44.73) and 200 IM (1:50.61), while Klein took first in the 200 breast in 2:01.80.
Kelly Marx finished first in the one-meter in 334.06 and took second on the three-meter with a score of 397.28.
Freshman Chris Kramer recorded second in the 1650 free with a time of 15:50.43. Freshman Stuart Ferguson finished second in the 200 fly in 1:50.71 and was followed by Kyle Owens in third (1:51.14) and Andrew Mitchell in fourth (1:51.78).
On the women's side of competition, a quartet of Tigers picked up first-place finishes for Auburn. Senior Ava Ohlgren won the 100 fly in 54.78, while Arianna Vanderpool-Wallce took first in the 50 free with a time of 23.10. Vanderpool-Wallace also finished second in the 100 fly in 55.02.
Sophomore divers Anna Aguero and Vennie Dantin led the way on the springboard events Aguero captured one-meter title with a score of 279.82, while Dantin won three-meter with 318.38 points.
The team of Melissa Marik, Becca Jones, Hannah Riordan, Vanderpool-Wallace closed out the meet with a strong first-place finish in the 400 free relay, touching the wall in 3:21.91.
The Tigers got a pair of second-place finishes in the backstroke events. Marik took second in the 100 back in 55.26, while junior Erica Meissner finished second in the 200 back with 1:59.44.
Junior Micah Lawrence led Auburn in both breaststrokes, taking second in the 100 breast in 1:02.23 and 200 breast in 2:14.80.
Micah Martindale led the way in the distance events finishing third in the 1650 free (16:51.21) and 500 free (4:54.18). Stephanie Horner recorded a fourth-place finish in the 500 free in 4:54.50 for Auburn. Melanie Roberts took third in the 200 fly in 2:02.81 for the Tigers.
The Tiger women finished 2-3-4 in the 200 free, led by Ohlgren. The captain took second in 1:48.63, with junior Caitlin Geary in third (1:49.81) and Jones finishing fourth (1:50.19). Geary also finished second in the 100 free with 50.33, while Ohlgren picked up second in the 200 IM in 2:01.62.
The 200 medley relay of Marik, Lawrence, Vanderpool-Wallace and Riordan finished second to open the meet with a time of 1:41.84.
The Tigers take a couple weeks off from competition before returning the pool on Jan. 22. Auburn travels to SEC rival Florida for a conference dual meet, starting at 4 p.m.
